Morning vs night skincare routine: what goes where
Updated · 5 min read
Your morning and evening routines can use many of the same products — they just have different jobs. Mornings are about a light, comfortable base under sunscreen; evenings are about a richer, unhurried finish.
The morning routine: light and protected
In the morning, you want skin to feel hydrated without a heavy finish, so it sits well under sunscreen and makeup. Keep it short.
- A gentle cleanse, or just a rinse with lukewarm water.
- A lightweight serum.
- A gel-cream or lighter moisturizer.
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen, every day, as the last step.
Why sunscreen is non-negotiable
Sunscreen is the step that matters most in a morning routine. Apply it generously as the final layer, after your moisturizer has settled, and reapply as directed on the label when you are outdoors.
Serums and creams are for how skin looks and feels; they are not a substitute for sun protection.
The night routine: cleanse well, finish rich
At night there is no makeup or sunscreen to layer under, so this is a good time for a richer texture and a slower routine.
- Cleanse thoroughly to remove sunscreen and makeup.
- A silkier evening serum, if you use one.
- A richer cream to leave skin feeling soft overnight.
- Eye cream, tapped lightly around the orbital bone.
Can you use the same products morning and night?
Yes. Many people use one serum and one moisturizer twice a day and are perfectly happy. Splitting products between morning and night is about preference — a lighter feel for daytime, a cushier one for bed — not a requirement.
Keep it comfortable
Trying something new? Patch test it first, and stop using any product that causes irritation. If skin feels tight or uncomfortable, simplify the routine back to cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen for a while.
Questions
Should I use serums in the morning or at night?
Either works. Use lighter textures in the morning under sunscreen and richer ones at night, or use the same products for both.
Do I need to wash my face in the morning?
Not always. If your skin is not oily and you cleansed well the night before, a splash of lukewarm water may feel better than a full cleanse.
Where does eye cream go in the routine?
After serum, around the same time as moisturizer. Use a small amount and tap it around the orbital bone, keeping it out of the eyes.
Do I still need sunscreen on cloudy days?
Yes. Make sunscreen the last step of every morning routine, whatever the weather.
For external cosmetic use. Patch test new products and stop use if irritation occurs. See ingredients & safety.
