How to layer a serum and moisturizer

Layering is less about rules and more about texture: thin to thick, water-light to rich. Here is a simple way to apply a serum and a moisturizer so each one feels right on skin.
The basic order: thinnest to thickest
Apply products from the lightest, most fluid texture to the richest. A serum is usually thin and water-light, so it goes on first, onto clean skin. A cream or gel-cream comes next and sits on top.
This order lets each layer spread evenly. A heavy cream applied first can make a thin serum glide around rather than settle in.
- Cleanse and pat skin mostly dry.
- Serum: a few drops, pressed in with your palms.
- Moisturizer: a small amount, smoothed over the face and neck.
- Morning only: finish with sunscreen.
How much to use
More product does not mean a better result — it usually means a tacky finish and pilling under makeup. For most faces, two to three drops of serum and a pea-to-almond-sized amount of cream is plenty.
If your skin still feels tight after a few minutes, add a little more moisturizer rather than more serum.
Do you need to wait between layers?
A short pause helps. Give the serum 30 to 60 seconds to settle before the cream, so the two do not mix into a slippery film. You do not need to wait until skin is completely dry.
In the morning, give your moisturizer a minute or two before sunscreen and makeup to reduce pilling.
Damp or dry skin?
Many people like applying a hydrating serum to skin that is still slightly damp from cleansing — it tends to spread more easily and feel more comfortable. Just avoid applying to skin that is dripping wet, which dilutes the layer and makes it run.
A note on new products
Trying something new? Patch test it first, and stop using any product that causes irritation. Introduce one new step at a time so you can tell how each one feels on your skin.

Does serum go before or after moisturizer?
Before. Apply the thinner serum to clean skin first, then seal it in with your moisturizer on top.
Can I mix serum and moisturizer in my hand?
You can, and it is quicker, but layering them separately usually gives a more even, less tacky finish.
